A Baláta-tó a természetvédelem szempontjából egy rendkívül értékes láp ("szentély"). A körülötte (a védőzónában) található erdők savanyú homokon kialakult gyertyános és cseres tölgyes állományok, kisebb részben égerlápok. Ezek telepített állományok és erősen kezeltek, részben legelők - sok esetben a termőhelynek nem megfelelő fafajjal való - betelepítésével lettek létrehozva. Ma, e telepített állományok gyors és természetes átalakulása tapasztalható, azonban az erdőrezervátumhoz tartozó erdőterület kicsi és keskeny szegélyként van csak jelen.

"Baláta-tó is an outstandingly valuable bog (sanctuary) from the point of view of nature conservation. The surrounding forests (in the buffer zone) are hornbeam and turkey oak-pedunculate oak stands on acid sand, ash swamp forests to lesser extent. These stands are planted and strongly managed, have been created partly by afforestation of pastures – in many cases by tree species that are not suitable for site. Today, fast and natural transition of these planted stands can be experienced; nevertheless, the forest land area that belongs to the reserve is presented only as a small and narrow border."
